The King’s Jester
As we conclude our tour, Dear Friends,
Before we convene across the Pond...
I thought to share with you a bit
In hopes to charm you and respond!
King Edward VII (1901-1910) the son of Queen Victoria (who incidentally was the longest ‘heir apparent' at 54 years before our own Charles III at 66) was known as a 'bon-vivant', a playboy of many passions. Both before and after he became King, he had numerous liaisons with the fashionable fairer sex. Upon marriage, his Queen did not seem to mind, for as with cultured women of the time, she felt the fewer pregnancies the better!
Scandalizing Victorian England, one of Edward's dalliances was with a married woman - the gorgeous, enchanting seductress, Lillie Langtry.
Following an afternoon tryst with the lovely lady, Edward is reported to have said to Lillie, "I have spent enough on you to build a battleship." To which Lillie replied with a bit of ribald wit,
"Dear sir, you have spent enough IN me to have launched one!" Oooolala
