From the building seen in the background, the young Queen, Marie Antoinette, finished her piano lesson then stood and gazed out the window across Place Louis XVI (Place de la Concorde) recently named in honor of her husband, the new King.
Little did she expect that 18 years later in1793 she would see 20,000 Parisians gathered at that same spot eager to watch her die under the pitiless blade of the guillotine at the start of the French Revolution.

Prior to her death, the Queen requested her hair be shorn to ease the passage of the gullotine's blade through her neck
